Frozen Beauty—A Photo Essay

By Diane Ursu

I am in wonder and awe of Lake Superior. I haven’t always felt this way, but I have always known that it is a lake that demands great respect. It can be wild and fierce or smooth and calm; neither is rare.

I chose the default location of Presque Isle in Marquette for our snowshoe journey, today. After yesterday’s disappointment, I knew that Presque Isle would offer stunning views, unique experiences, and even a little character.

Enter the first photo essay of 2009. These photographs were taken while embarking on a journey in the counterclockwise direction of the park.

On our drive to Presque Isle, we saw a freighter leaving Marquette.

Icicles formed where the cliffs met the water.

The miracle that is water surrounded Presque Isle in many forms, from wet rock to blue ice to a light covering of snow.

Little streams rushing in from Lake Superior encircled the great rocky masses along the shore.

The lake was restless with whitecaps not only along the shore, but on the horizon as well.

While a lot of these photos have a blue tint, this picture demonstrates the true color of the ice that was found along the shore.
