Exhaustion

By Diane Ursu

It is truly amazing how one can abuse one’s body beyond limitations.

I find myself uselessly sitting at my computer, today. I’ve skimmed over the fairly inactive MMBA Forum countless times, today. I have no energy. I am tired. My throat is raw. I nearly gagged on phlegm. Life is full of little goodies.

Amanda and I headed down to the Lansing area for the Michigan Mountain Biking Association’s Expo and Annual Meeting. I’ll write more about that, tomorrow. Friday, we arrived in town and headed to my favorite East Lansing bar, Crunchy’s. I was allowed to sing a karaoke song before they closed up for the night – we got there late. We had a couple of beers and life was good.

Saturday morning, Amanda and I went shopping with my dad for some breakfast items. We made scrambled eggs, hash browns, Johnsonville sausages (triple yummy), and biscuits and gravy. It was a pretty sweet meal. Amanda and I then proceeded to work on our display for Sunday’s expo. We had lunch, then drove into East Lansing for some more time at Crunchy’s. This time, we showed up early. We both indulged in a pretty tasty milk stout made by Left Hand Brewing out of Longmont, Colorado. After lots of beer and plenty of karaoke with easily excitable college-aged men who really enjoyed a good song, we headed home and passed out.

Sunday sucked…

…but only because I had a hangover. It wasn’t a bad hangover, but enough to have made me get out of bed earlier that morning for some water.

I hadn’t eaten anything for breakfast. I was going to grab a latte and some kind of goody in East Lansing, but forgot. We headed straight to the expo to prep. After noon, I headed out for a downtown walk to the local sub shop for my first bit of sustenance for the day. It was quite a life saver. I still felt a little hungover, but the sandwich had at least quieted my screaming stomach.

We finished our Sunday at Crunchy’s to watch an old friend perform. We sat around staring at our water glasses for his first set and left after chatting a bit. The beer and the sleep deprivation were getting to us.

Monday, Amanda was subjected to my usual dawdling. We got the car packed, headed to East Lansing for a quick tour of Michigan State University, then it was off to Lansing for burritos. We left for up north at about 2:30 pm.

We arrived safely in Hancock at 12:30. We were exhausted. The weekend was most certainly rough on us, but it was a great experience. I loved hanging out with my old friends and enjoying the scene. Now, it’s over, and I am very happy to be back at home. I look forward to getting back on track with my Keweenaw lifestyle.

Yes we did. I just didn’t write about it.
