Facebook Will Never Be the Same

By Diane Ursu

So many people have asked me to join Facebook. “You should join! It’s really cool!” Amanda even went as far as to tell me that my own brother was one of her Facebook friends. That’s kind of weird.

Well, I’m sure some of you will be happy to know that I’ve just signed up for a Facebook account. Unfortunately, Facebook will not allow me to truly personalize my account. For example, it won’t allow me to write “The Keweenaw” in the hometown field in my personal profile. What gives!? Do I really want all these freaky Facebook people knowing where I live?

While trying to fill out my info, I kept getting a little popup window that said:

Something went wrong. We’re working on getting this fixed as soon as we can. You may be able to try again.

So far, Facebook sucks patootie. First of all, I don’t need a poorly written web site to moderate every little field I fill in. Isn’t this supposed to be a shining beacon of my personality? Shouldn’t I be able to fill out my interests and activities without having that Javascript error popup for every field my cursor touches? I was actually hoping that Facebook would allow me to turn off the Javascript and auto-fillin feature for morons. Unfortunately, Facebook doesn’t feel that I can handle that kind of responsibility. Now, I realize the reason for this is so Facebook can link to my favorite books and movies, but I really can’t give a straight answer. That is simply boring.

Moving on, I decided to check out my settings. I absolutely do not want email notifications, so I had to click over 40 “Off” buttons because Facebook assumes that I automatically want to be notified. They didn’t even give me a feature to “turn all options off.” That would be nice. I mean, really, if I were to get an email notification every time someone did something or sent me something, wouldn’t it be more efficient to simply bypass Faceboook and send the information that [doesn't] really matters directly to my Inbox?

Moving On

I added a few friends or submitted requests begging them to let me be their friend. We’ll see how it goes. By the end of the week, my friend list will be, well, non-existent. I’m a popular girl. ;-)

I decided to join the brand new Facebook group: Michigan Mountain Biking Association. Really, how can I not be a part of this? This is the one web site I visit every day, so it is only fitting that my Facebook experience is complete with an additional dose of MMBA.

I look forward to sharing with you the amazing ways that Facebook improves my life and brightens my day.

Well, if facebook sucks that much- quit your bitching and don’t even use it. Why use such wasted time complaining about it instead of going for a bicycle ride?

Unknown – it was satire that was obviously lost on you.
