The Bike Toss
By Diane UrsuTuesday was great for one reason: I got to see Glen throw his bike.
Ali, Glen, and I rode Burchfield in Holt on Tuesday. The parts that were raked were greasy and difficult to ride. The parts that were untouched were fast and in great shape; however, Burchfield has many stunts, and some of them don’t seem to be strategically placed.
This has never been one of my favorite trails, but it is worth visiting. There are some features that are fun. There is a great piece of singletrack along the Grand River that has some fun, technical features. Some of the technical features are more like freeriding stunts, though. It would be nice to see a tech loop at Burchfield that was designed for cross country riding.
Glen is bolder than I, so he opened up a little more on the singletrack and tried many more stunts. After his third fall, he got up, hoisted his bike, and tossed it aside. Ali and I just looked at each other for a moment, but both of us were laughing inside.
What is really funny is that Glen is about as mellow as they come. He was experiencing what most of us have experienced, though—a frustrating ride after several hard rides. There are days when nothing seems to come together, and fall after fall after mishap occurs. It really doesn’t matter how good you are, it happens. It is on these days when one of the more unique mountain biking events may occur: the bike toss.

Been there….done that……..
I think what makes it funny is that Glen did exactly what I have wanted to do SO many times but was too afraid of break’n the bike!
Well, that and Glen made it look like the bike weighed nothing when he picked it up. I would’ve struggled a little more, so I wouldn’t have been as graceful.
