Nine Nights Away from My Bed
By Diane UrsuIt felt so incredibly good to sleep in my own bed…for 12 hours. It was so soft, and the sheets were cool. I had my faithful little wiener dogs by my side. This was what I had been longing for throughout the weekend.
My week was long. I headed up to Ali’s the Friday before last to celebrate her birthday with her and Andrea. I slept on an air mattress on the floor for three nights. Thanks, G! The mattress was so much better than what was in store for me in the future days.
After Ali’s, I headed to Cheboygan for a funeral. My aunt passed away that weekend, as suspected, so I made the journey to meet up with my family on Monday. Two nights in a hotel were a bonus, but it was an exhausting two days. I spent my final and third night in Cheboygan at Cheboygan State Park. It took a couple of hours to set up camp because I had to prepare for a thunderstorm. I managed to stay dry, that night, but the hard ground is still hard.
Friday, I drove down to Grayling to meet Ali and Glen at Hanson Hills Recreation Area to help out with the Michigan Bike Festival, which included the Logsplitter race. By this time, I was already pretty tired, but I managed to keep going. I spent two nights sleeping on tabletops because it was too rainy to set up camp, there were no good places to set up the tent where it would stay dry, and the concrete floor in the chalet was much too hard for anyone.
Come Sunday morning, I was desperate to get home. I helped clean up the chalet and opted to forego the mountain biking for the drive home.
My bed felt so good, that night.
