2012 Tour de France Prologue and Stage 1: Liège to Seraing
By Diane UrsuThe 2012 Tour de France Prologue began with a 4-mile time trial in Liège, Belgium. Not surprisingly, Luxembourg’s Fabian Cancellara, racing for RadioShack-Nissan, won the Prologue to be the bearer of the yellow jersey for the 123-mile Stage 1 from Liège to Seraing. Bradley Wiggins (Sky Procycling, Great Britain) and Sylvain Chavanel (Belgium, Omega Pharma-Quick Step) came in just seven seconds after Cancellara.
Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale, Slovakia) won the sprint to the finish to take his first stage win in his first Tour de France! He will wear the green jersey in Stage 2. Cancellara finished second, but maintains the overall and the sprint leads as well as the yellow jersey. Edvald Boasson Hagen (Sky Procycling, Norway) finished third. Michael Morkov (Team Saxo Bank-Tinkoff Bank, Denmark) will sport the polka-dot jersey. Tejay Van Garderen (BMC Racing Team, United States) maintains his lead in the youth classification.
