I’m not quite sure what prompted me to actually start a blog, but I’m sure it had something to do with the shameless promotion of Moronacity.com. Moronacity has existed since 2004 and evolved from a web hobby that I began back in 1997.
In the Past
I have been competitive since I was 13 years old. A mountain bike wasn’t part of the picture, though. I rode a horse. I spent my teenage years in the local 4H program exploring the diversity of equestrian sports on a slow, calm, lazy horse named I Am a Pleasure. I loved that horse, dearly. Our age difference was less than two months. In our later years, she threw calm out the window because she knew I liked to play as much as she did. We dabbled in different different disciplines: Western, Hunt Seat (English), Gymkhana (barrels), and jumping.

I joined the Michigan State University Equestrian Team in 1998 and competed that spring and fall. In the summer of 2008, I took a Dressage course offered through the Agricultural College. Dressage is a riding discipline (English) that focuses on the development of a oneness between horse and rider. The following summer, I joined the United States Dressage Federation and competed at a show in Mason, Michigan (south of Lansing) with Ima. She wasn’t exactly a dressage horse (really stocky Paint horse – think Indian horse), but we had a great riding relationship. I walked away with second and fourth place ribbons that day. That was my last great hoorah with Ima.
In 2002, Ima passed away from suspected congestive heart failure. We were 25. It is something that still brings a tear to my eye.
A hint of Ima’s beauty lives on in her 1995 foal, Myst at Dawne. Dawne was a bit neglected over the years because of my professional and educational experiences. Life took me everywhere but home. I brought Dawne to the Keweenaw when I moved here in 2006, but my life choices made it impossible for me to afford to keep her. I sold her last summer. That was the end of my horsing around.
In the Present
I began mountain biking in the summer of 2006. Someone introduced me to the Michigan Tech Trails at the end of May. By the end of July, I had a new Trek full suspension mountain bike. It was a sign.
Mountain biking quickly became an obsession. Not only is it loads of fun and good for me in so many important ways, but I’ve met so many wonderful people. I consider myself truly blessed to be here, in the Keweenaw, with my friends doing what we love best. You can read about how I got into mountain biking in the first few posts of this blog.
I spend much of my energy helping to promote mountain biking in the Keweenaw. I am a member of several organizations. I try to volunteer at least 20 hours of trail work per year. My mountain biking resume follows:
• Member of the MMBA (since 2007), At-Large State Board Member
• IMBA (1 year+)
• Red Jacket–Bluesky Health Cycling Team, At-Large Board Member and forum administrator
• Copper Country Cycling Club, 2009 Fall Color Tour coordinator and webmaster

What This Blog is About
This is a cycling blog. The challenge of writing this blog is that I live in the Keweenaw. It is the perfect place for a cyclist . . . in the summer. In the winter, there are no trails and road riding isn’t necessarily safe. It is also a skiing mecca, so that is usually what cyclists do. My winter activities consist of cross country skate skiing and snowshoeing. I’ll do an occasional bike ride out of desperation.
With that said, the definition of the Moronacity blog is a cycling blog with a heavy emphasis on a cross-training season.
I am also a spiritual person, so there is a bit of religion and philosophy along the way.
I have always been an artistic person, and I have found that photography is my favorite way of expressing how I see the world around me. This blog is a showcase for my art. Pictures are meant to be seen, and I appreciate all the comments I have received in appreciation of my art.
