Absence of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)

Absence of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS)

How do you feel when you have muscle soreness after a workout? Do you feel accomplished? Do you feel like you’re seriously building muscle? How do you feel when you reach that point when you no longer feel that sore-muscle pain after a workout? No, really, how does that make you feel?I haven’t felt muscle pain after cycling for several years. That includes the 50-mile ride I did the year … Read entire article »

Motivating a Tired and Sluggish Self

Motivating a Tired and Sluggish Self

Motivation. It is difficult to determine what it is that drives us. Okay, not always. After all, I know why I’ve been exercising these last two months. I want to be stronger and faster on the bike, and it would nice if my weight would eventually fall in line with that of an active lifestyle. Today was difficult. I felt tired and sluggish (prior to the margaritas). I … Read entire article »

Preparing for THE Time Trial

Preparing for THE Time Trial

Look at THAT sexy bike. Oh, yeah. That’s my Jake the Snake. Think what you will, you sick-minded fool, but Jake serves most of my needs: mainly those for speed, slight danger, and . . . more speed. It’s pretty damn snowy, here. I won’t be riding Jake on the roads anytime soon, although it is certainly time to start training for the Barry-Roubaix. I am definitely getting hit … Read entire article »

Recommiting to My Workout

Recommiting to My Workout

Two weeks ago, I halted my exercise program in favor of five days off. I was suffering the effects of overtraining and felt like I needed a rest. Getting started was another issue. I had a difficult time restarting the program because, well, laziness takes over after only two or three days. Also, the final weeks leading up to the MMBA Annual Meeting & Expo became a full-time job. My Inbox was … Read entire article »

The Power of Plyometrics

The Power of Plyometrics

My workouts usually incorporate some moves that require me to launch myself up into the air. Doing these moves, even for a short duration, often requires a lot of strength and aerobic endurance. These moves are known as plyometrics. According to the Bicycling article, “Build Power, Save Time,” by Chris Carmichael, who is well-known for coaching Lance Armstrong, “Plyometrics are mostly jumping exercises targeted at making your muscles exert maximum force faster.” Plyometrics … Read entire article »

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive Part III

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive Part III

The Cottonwood Trail is scenic post number four along the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It was a remarkable hike because the landscape clearly demonstrates the ecological concept of succession, and I had that in mind as I did it. Being a mountain biker who has been to two IMBA Trails Schools and helped build a few trails, I also had something else in mind: … Read entire article »

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Platte River Campground

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Platte River Campground

The Midwest Mountain Bike Summit ended on Sunday, September 12, and I drove straight up to the Platte River Campground to meet my parents for a weekend of camping. This campground is part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This was the first time I’ve seen the lakeshore since I was a really little kid, and the only recollection I have of it was climbing the dune. We had a mixture of … Read entire article »

Vancouver Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Bravo, Canada! More specifically, bravo, Vancouver! Last night’s Olympic opening ceremonies were nothing short of spectacular. Vancouver welcomed the world with fantastic, visual storytelling of Canadian culture. The display started with Canadian Aboriginals walking on ice that broke up and floated away under the northern lights, which were created by tiered screens hanging from the ceiling of the arena. Projection cameras created the rolling, bouncing northern lights, took us through the lush forests of Canada, wheat fields, and onward to mountainous terrain with snowboarders and skiers. The opening ceremonies gave us a glimpse into Canadian culture. Personally, I would love to go find the funky, tap-dancing fiddlers and pull up chair, give a listen, and enjoy a good, Canadian beer. Donald Sutherland’s voice was … Read entire article »
