Bill Karinen – Beloved Bike Mechanic Passed Away Last Week

Bill Karinen – Beloved Bike Mechanic Passed Away Last Week

Yesterday was a sad day for those living in the Keweenaw. Many gathered together to celebrate the life of Bill Karinen. Word quickly spread throughout the Keweenaw community on Wednesday, December 16 that Bill and his son, Pete, were in a head-on collision just outside of South Range. The airbag deployed for his son, Pete, and the other driver who were both taken to Portage Hospital for treatment. Both survived. … Read entire article »

Thank You, Mountain Bikers!

As I head back to the Upper Peninsula after an unexpectedly long, two-month hiatus from the Keweenaw life, I would like to thank quite a few people who have been there for me while I’ve been away from home. Ali B. – for giving me a place to stay for Iceman, even though I never made it there. Andrea D. – for providing excellent constructive criticism for the brochure. Brad H. – for helping me when I broke my bike. Chris M. – for carpooling with me to the trails conference, and for lending me a bike and giving me a tour of Anderson Park and Burchfield. Dave C. – for the awesome tour of the Tree Farm. John R. – for putting a roof over my head for several days, giving me a tour of … Read entire article »

2009 Ore to Shore Protest Dinner – The Jeff Kirlin Experience

I was very excited to go to Ore to Shore, this year. I always look forward to having dinner with my friends from the Lower Peninsula. This year, we went to Aubree’s in Marquette, [star date] Friday, August 7. I sent the invitation for this event via Facebook. The funny thing is that Facebook requires you to categorize your “event,” so I went with “Protest.” I thought it worked. An interesting topic came up during our “protest” dinner: Jeff Kirlin. If you don’t know who Jeff Kirlin is, well, I don’t either. Jeff is some guy in Maine who happens to be on Facebook friending innocents from the Michigan Mountain Biking Association. That includes me. Yes, I’m an … Read entire article »

Whirlwind

Whirlwind

My mind is a whirlwind. The best thing to do with a whirlwind mind is to keep it busy. Don’t let it think. Thinking is bad. Thinking gets one into trouble. Maybe that’s why so many people from so many places have called me that. True story. Last night, I solicited a response from someone. This morning, I knew that response would be promptly waiting for me. … Read entire article »

Bad Decision Cyclist

Bad Decision Cyclist

My teammate, James, has taken on a fun hobby: blogging. Ha, James! I caught you! You can have the great honor of following his blog from the very beginning. He has a total of three posts. Let me warn you, though, James is quite wordy, and his expressions aren’t necessarily for the prim and proper. James certainly has a way with words. A quick note on endurance racing for … Read entire article »

Metaphorical Mountain Biking

Tire tracks are like the path of life. They run through smooth sections of trail, over roots, rocks, through water, up mountains, and down hills. The occasional smooth section of trail can be a welcome break. It is the opportunity to go faster with less effort, and we can reach for some water or food and allow the lungs to rest up a bit. However, smooth trail can be overdone. After a while, it becomes monotonous and sucks all joy and happiness out of us. It is no longer exciting. It is not rest, but work. It turns into a mental struggle. Life can be the same way. Think about what it is like to start a new job. It is … Read entire article »

Random Bike Wisdom #2

Life is like a box of chain links. You can use what you have to form a chain and move forward, but you will never be without kinks, chain suck, and rust; and lube and quick links will always be necessary investments. All you can do is your best with what you have. … Read entire article »
