A Comfortable Disconnect of Physical Hell

I am not a happy person. I’m not quite sure what triggered this, and I find it a little difficult to admit, which is why I chose to be vague, today, but I find myself in a bit of a relapse. Maybe it’s because we had a dose of spring followed by gloomy skies, strong winds, and freezing rain. Maybe this close-to-the-ending-of-winter following a long winter of much effort on my part is the final straw. All I know is that I now find myself in a bad place. I am unhappy. “All I want is a hot, sunny day,” is something I find myself frequently telling people, these days. The truth is, it isn’t just what I want, but something I need. I need to … Read entire article »

I Just Want Healthy Cereal!

My favorite cereals are produced right here in Michigan. That’s great! I love buying foods that support the local economy – from the town level to the state level. Heck, I even prefer Wisconsin cheese over California cheese because Wisconsin, well, it is pretty local. I don’t eat a lot of cereal, but the cereal faces the bread in the store where I shop, and I felt a bit of a craving for it when I picked up a couple of loaves of 7-grain yumminess. It probably had something to with the fact that I came into a nice sum of money and I knew I didn’t have to do the math in my head as I put items in the cart – kind of like a … Read entire article »

Devising a Plan

It seems as though following my diet is going well. What I am struggling with is the fact that 1100-1350 calories really isn’t that much. Your jaw probably just dropped. You’re thinking, “1100-1350 calories!? WTF, Di!?” Allow me to explain. In ~2002 (I think that’s the right year), I joined the Weight Watchers At Work program. Let me begin by saying that I lost a lot of weight, and while there was a bit of a yo-yo partly due to geographic location (Wisconsin), I’ve managed to consistently keep 25 of those pounds off. The last ten that I lost (total of 35 pounds) have been a regular battle, usually only becoming an issue in the winter. This is where I now stand. … Read entire article »

Time to Revise

Today marks the fifth day that I am sick. Yay. I haven’t had exercise for ten days, now. This is due in combination to preparing for the expo, traveling, and being sick. I have to do some necessary work: wood splitting and a twenty-minute snow blow, but that doesn’t really count. I’m a little upset about this lack of exercise for one huge reason: weight. Therefore, I am using today to not only catch up on my studies, writing, and housework, but to devise a plan (read: menu) to get me through these days of inactivity. Even if I feel well, tomorrow, I won’t be able to do anything because I have to be available for the hospital. … Read entire article »

In Praise of Icerberg Lettuce

In my former life, I was an aspiring runner. I did quite a few races, including two marathons, but the habit never took hold. I simply did not have a lot of fun. I did, however, really enjoy reading Runner’s World. The magazine was full of great information, including excellent nutritional information mostly provided by Liz Applegate, Ph.D., nutritionist at the University of California, Davis, and contributor to Runner’s World. Since I am a fan of lettuce, and I believe all foods have a place in one’s diet (that doesn’t mean I like them, though), I was happy to find that Liz reported on iceberg lettuce (Do They Have Any Nutritional Value?). Come to find out, iceberg lettuce is an excellent source of Vitamin K (1/6 … Read entire article »

Train Wreck

Last night, after snowshoeing, a shower, and some much needed girling up, I got a quick massage. It was a nice wake-up call. My friend, Johanna, is a massage therapist in Copper Harbor. In the winter, she gives massages upstairs at The Mariner North. During the warmer months, she can be found at her studio, Spirit of the North Wellness. Happy, exercised, showered, girled-up Di went for a 15-minute massage. I used to get somewhat regular massages, but that’s just not something a poor college student can do, these days, especially since much of my free money goes towards the traditional beverage of the area: beer. However, I’ve been having the usual pain associated with muscle tightness caused by lots of snowshoeing … Read entire article »

Vacancy Welcomed

Note: I have some funky, weird visual thing going on with my computer, so I really can’t see what I’m doing as I post this. I have finally put up the posts for the last four days. I think you will find some of them quite enjoyable. I also proofread these once I get to a computer that doesn’t have some funky, weird visual thing going on with it. I am a little disappointed in today’s outcome. For the last two days, my throat has been hinting that something just might be wrong. I heard its message, but I tried very hard to live in denial. Unfortunately, when your body has an unwelcome visitor, denial is quite off denied. … Read entire article »

A Pine Embraces a Birch

A Pine Embraces a Birch

Today is diet day number two. I have already lost one pound. All it took was a little exercise and a massive amount of self-control. Fun stuff! Last winter, I read a little bit in Bicycling about a little cheater trick for burning fat. I can’t find the issue with the information in it, but I will pass it on. The advice the article gave (several ideas) was bad advice, and … Read entire article »

Catching Up on Sleep

Catching Up on Sleep

I was a happy camper, last night. I was cozy on the couch with my dogs and we were watching three hours of House. Okay, I was watching House. The dogs were snoozing as they fought for real estate on the couch with my legs. I felt exhausted during the first episode. My body felt heavy and I found it difficult to get off the couch to … Read entire article »

“W” Strikes, Again

I’ve been quite the little party girl, lately. Dining out and consuming generous amounts of alcohol in the presence of friends has been the order of the day…for many days. Saturday night, I wisely went for breakfast before I drove home. I ate a lot – Perkin’s pancakes and eggs benedict. I love eggs benedict. Eggs benedict really aren’t waistline friendly, at least not when ingested among days of high-calorie consumption. I saw the frightening number of 180 when I stepped on the scale, yesterday morning. I really don’t think that 180 is the number, but it was there because I had eaten a large breakfast at 3:00 in the morning and drank three large glasses of water throughout the course of the morning – throughout … Read entire article »
