Catching Up on Sleep

Catching Up on Sleep

I was a happy camper, last night. I was cozy on the couch with my dogs and we were watching three hours of House. Okay, I was watching House. The dogs were snoozing as they fought for real estate on the couch with my legs. I felt exhausted during the first episode. My body felt heavy and I found it difficult to get off the couch to … Read entire article »

“W” Strikes, Again

I’ve been quite the little party girl, lately. Dining out and consuming generous amounts of alcohol in the presence of friends has been the order of the day…for many days. Saturday night, I wisely went for breakfast before I drove home. I ate a lot – Perkin’s pancakes and eggs benedict. I love eggs benedict. Eggs benedict really aren’t waistline friendly, at least not when ingested among days of high-calorie consumption. I saw the frightening number of 180 when I stepped on the scale, yesterday morning. I really don’t think that 180 is the number, but it was there because I had eaten a large breakfast at 3:00 in the morning and drank three large glasses of water throughout the course of the morning – throughout … Read entire article »

Sow, na

Having lived in and/or associated with the great Upper Peninsula citizens for over five years, I have finally succumbed to the appropriate pronunciation of the word sauna. Having come from Lower Michigan, I tend to say, “saw’na.” That just doesn’t sound right, anymore. While reading an excellent cross country ski magazine, I came across an article about the glorious sauna. One of the first things this magazine did was set its readers straight about the pronunciation of the word: sow’na. How ’bout that! Merriam-Webster gives both pronunciations, while The Free Dictionary gives only the former. The Upper Peninsula, especially the Keweenaw Peninsula, has a large Finnish influence. These American citizens are often referred to as the Fins, or Finlanders. The culture is different, here, … Read entire article »

Meltdown Meets Solution

Some of you may think it’s kind of unusual how I haven’t been very devoted to my blog, lately, or that I haven’t been taking much time to comment on the MMBA forum. You’ve read about my evasion of the U.P. Cyclocross Championships, and my inability to make an actual ride happen, either due to weather, school, or lack of energy. I may not have put it like that, but I have pretty much been experiencing a meltdown. I felt fat, unattractive, lazy, unhealthy, unhappy, and just plain “un.” Due to the timing of my very busy schedule and our very unwelcome rainy weather, I haven’t been able to really ride in three weeks. Anyone who regularly rides knows that missing three weeks of intense activity can … Read entire article »

Cal, see ‘em endo?

I am somewhat intrigued by the fact that I’ve taken some hard falls – swan dives, superman dives, endoes from hell – and walked away like it was nothing. Sure, my muscles, skin, and blood vessels have been abused from strains, scrapes, cuts, and bruises, but my bones have been just fine. I have never broken a bone. Why is that when I’ve had the ideal clavicle-busting crash, I walked away with a tight, stressed lower back that took several months and some roadie time to stretch back to the normal and heal; but that was all? I have a theory. I take in a lot of dairy. Oh, yes. I am the queen of dairy. Milk, cheese, and yogurt are major staples in … Read entire article »

A Simple Guide to Wine

A Simple Guide to Wine

Everyone has heard about the health benefits of drinking wine in moderation because many magazines and newspapers across the country frequently write about it. Wine has also been shown to aid in digestion when taken with meals, something that isn’t written about very much. What I find interesting is that the art of choosing a wine is usually lost in the health-conscious hubbub. No matter what the benefits may be, who is … Read entire article »

Changes

Well, I certainly did not stay within my POINTS range, today. Before dinner, I’ve consumed 41 POINTS. That works out to about 2,050 calories. I knew what I was getting into with the milkshake. That was planned. I feel like crap. I feel tired and my throat hurts. It’s been hurting for two days, now. Yes, I have a cold. Ick. How fun. I wanted super cool comfort food, so I bought a bucket of Jilberts vanilla ice cream. It took care of my throat for about the duration of the grand sucking down of yummy chocolate shake. Now, that shake would not have been so full of calories if I limited myself to the half-scoop of … Read entire article »

A Difficult Challenge

Ali and I have begun to record our daily food intake on our blogs. When Andrea returns to blog land, I hope she will join us. Click here to read my weight loss proposal. I didn’t keep track of calories, yesterday, but I have started recording the numbers, today. I don’t record calories, fat, and fiber, but I keep track of my food intake using the Weight Watchers POINTS! system I learned when I was a member back in 2002 or so. I found the Weight Watchers meetings to be the greatest asset when I first started. I needed to be held accountable, and a weekly weigh-in with supportive talks and rewards, even though they were trivial, were quite helpful in helping me to drop over … Read entire article »

Endeavoring To Pursue An Interest

Anyone who knows me knows that I am full of brilliant ideas. Well, I have a brilliant idea I’d like to share with you. I have two particular readers in mind. Just follow me. Andrea was recently inspired by my reflective post about my 2008 goals to write a goal-oriented post of her own (read this sentence very carefully – it really does make sense). Ali recently wrote a post of goals as well. One goal we all expressed an interest in pursuing is weight loss. I say an interest in pursuing because I don’t want to say a goal we will meet and conquer until we actually do it. At least if it is simply a goal we are interested in … Read entire article »
