Dealing with the Poltergeist Called Life
For years, I’ve been in the practice of holding on to my vacation time like cash under the mattress during the Great Depression. Now, I’m *very, very, very* busy—both with the work I’m doing for my job and with the commitment I’ve made to myself as a mountain biker, for fun and for health. For the first time, I have a job with a good amount of vacation. It’s time to emerge from the “Great Depression” so I can take some “me time,” get my “stuff” in order, and stay healthy and happy. But is it really that simple? Life is complicated. It seems as if complete control over one’s life is nothing more than self-delusion. I know that I frequently fly high emotionally—usually … Read entire article »

Honoring Those Who Served
I recently had the honor of listening to Lieutenant General Russel Honoré, USA (retired) Commander of the Joint Task Force Katrina and Global Preparedness Expert, speak at a conference this past week. His words were quite appropriate during the advent of Memorial Day, a holiday commemorating those who have served and do serve in the United States Military. The British soldiers fought for the king. Your forefathers fought for freedom.” General Honoré said … Read entire article »

Best of Moronacity—2011
The Best of 2011 was pretty easy to review, but not because of all of the wonderful content. It turned out to be a pretty uninspired year, so I didn’t post very much. Even so, I managed to find a few gems. This is a year-in-review for Moronacity Cycling. Three best of lists follow. Links will open in a new window. Best Photos of 2011 A link to the original post follows each picture. Glen and … Read entire article »

Balance
This is really the first time I’ve sat in my new home—content, focused, goal-driven. I feel like things have been a whirlwind since I moved to Mount Clemens. I’ve been traveling a lot for both leisure and business, and my travel continues very early Monday morning—3:30 a.m.—when I scrape myself out of bed to make my way to the airport for a week of training in Denver, Colorado. I can lie to myself and say that I’m in control and living my life, but that never does any good. The fact is that I am simply rolling with the punches, not really in control, and I think I’m finally ready to get down to business and take control of everything. I can be fun and … Read entire article »

Glen and Ali’s Fourth of July Weekend—A Photo Essay Part I
Glen and I went to his house to pick up a few things. We saw the “bar bikes” and decided to load those. Glen didn’t realize he had a cherry tree in his yard. Cherries . . . in case you’re interested. Happy Father’s Day, Dad
Dad, there are lots of things you did to make my childhood special. You taught me how to build a snowman with four giant snowballs instead of only three. You bought me a Barbie and a Barbie Tonka Truck that I loved to play with in the snow. Later in life, I drove that brown pickup truck to high school. You taught me how to brush my teeth. You even put “tony pails” in my hair. You took us … Read entire article »

Happy 34th Birthday!
It’s my birthday! You may think I’m a little crazy, but I really wanted candles on my cake, and I wanted the full 34. Actually, now that I think about it, I know that some of you firmly believe that I am crazy. In my old age, I think I miscounted and only placed 33 candles on the cake. Oh, well. Blowing the candles out was super simple. I have super … Read entire article »

Being a Catholic “Athlete” during Lent
Those who know me know that I’m Catholic, and I do take my religion seriously. The older I get, the more I study my religion, the more seriously I take it. This year, Lenten fasting is something that I am taking much more seriously than I have in the past. I’ve always tried to observe Ash Wednesday fasting; after all, it’s always easiest on the first day; but, this year, in the … Read entire article »
