Happy Father’s Day, Dad

Happy Father’s Day, Dad

Dad, there are lots of things you did to make my childhood special. You taught me how to build a snowman with four giant snowballs instead of only three. You bought me a Barbie and a Barbie Tonka Truck that I loved to play with in the snow. Later in life, I drove that brown pickup truck to high school. You taught me how to brush my teeth. You even put “tony pails” in my hair. You took us … Read entire article »

Being a Catholic “Athlete” during Lent

Being a Catholic “Athlete” during Lent

Those who know me know that I’m Catholic, and I do take my religion seriously. The older I get, the more I study my religion, the more seriously I take it. This year, Lenten fasting is something that I am taking much more seriously than I have in the past. I’ve always tried to observe Ash Wednesday fasting; after all, it’s always easiest on the first day; but, this year, in the … Read entire article »

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Did You Know? Christmas is 12 days long – December 25 to January 6, which is the Epiphany of our Lord. Some sects of Christianity celebrate Christmas by exchanging gifts on each of the 12 days. In the How Stuff Works article, “What are the 12 days of Christmas,” Sam Abramson says, “Some cultures, like the French and Spanish, celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany with a king’s cake, a coffee cake with purple, green and yellow icing … Read entire article »

A Good Start

A Good Start

I decided to head to Copper Harbor to greet 2009 with people I hold near and dear to me: my friends. I was quite surprised to find that this little white, northernmost town in Michigan provided the most exciting New Year’s party in the history of Di. New Year’s even started on a healthy note when I took a little stroll along Lake Superior with my good friend, Amanda. There was a break … Read entire article »

Gratitude

Gratitude

My dad came to visit for Thanksgiving, leaving mom and my brothers behind in Lower Michigan. This picture is mostly for them so they can see what they missed. Thanksgiving is something many try to force on a national holiday by making lists. Thanksgiving is something I don’t necessarily feel on the holiday, itself, but it is worth reflecting on those times I’ve felt true, deep gratitude, and how those … Read entire article »

Thanksgiving Eve

It usually isn’t thought of like that. It really isn’t a special day at all, but the day before Thanksgiving can be quite useful. Many people are busy shopping for food and thawing out their turkeys. They are preparing for family visits and getting ready to ingest a lot of food. Usually, by the evening of Thanksgiving, Americans all over the country really aren’t that thankful for their overstuffed bellies and the accompanying pain. It really isn’t that fun. That’s why tonight can be helpful. Today, like any other day before a festive holiday, should be used to plan for the holiday, including some quality exercise time. Usually, walks are reserved for after dinner, but any athlete – amateur, professional, or otherwise – knows that … Read entire article »

He is Risen!

He is Risen!

Happy Easter! Today is the earliest Easter most of us will ever experience. The earliest Easter can ever be is March 22 and the latest is April 25. The next time Easter will be on March 22 will be 2285! I’m willing to bet that most of us will have passed on by then. I hope all of you have had a wonderful weekend and continue to enjoy the Easter season. … Read entire article »

Good Friday

Good Friday

It’s an absolutely beautiful day in the Keweenaw! The sun is shining brightly and the temperatures are toasty – in the upper 20s Fahrenheit. Today is also a very special day: Good Friday. Today is a day of worship, and I am spending the majority of it as such. The world over, Christians mediate on the Passion of Christ (John 18:1–19:42). There was a vessel filled with common wine. So they put … Read entire article »
