2010 NaNoWriMo Winner

2010 NaNoWriMo Winner

Moronacity has been kind of slow, this month, but that doesn’t mean that I haven’t been writing. Unfortunately, none of that will appear on this website, and the project has yet to be finished. I participated in National Novel Writing Month, which is more affectionately known by the writers as NaNoWriMo. Either way, it’s a mouthful. The goal is to write a novel of at least 50,000 words through the month of November. … Read entire article »

Nine Nights Away from My Bed

It felt so incredibly good to sleep in my own bed…for 12 hours. It was so soft, and the sheets were cool. I had my faithful little wiener dogs by my side. This was what I had been longing for throughout the weekend. My week was long. I headed up to Ali’s the Friday before last to celebrate her birthday with her and Andrea. I slept on an air mattress on the floor for three nights. Thanks, G! The mattress was so much better than what was in store for me in the future days. After Ali’s, I headed to Cheboygan for a funeral. My aunt passed away that weekend, as suspected, so I made the journey to meet up … Read entire article »

Happy Birthday, Ali!

Happy Birthday, Ali!

Yesterday was Ali’s birthday. (She’s 37, but don’t tell anyone. ) Andrea and I both made the journey to Ali’s home to spend the weekend doing what we do best: eating, drinking, making merry, and playing with bikes. Ali and Glen. Friday night proved to be interesting. Glen and Andrea did the cyclocross race that is party of the Cherry Roubaix events in Traverse City. We … Read entire article »

Getting Back on Track

I feel like such a yo-yo. Yeah, it’s a weight thing. Let’s see. I’ve been up, down, up, down, up, down, and back up over the last 15 years. I’m back on the Zone and trying to get my life into a scheduled habit. I am a creature of habit, and if I break that habit, then all hell breaks loose and all of my effort turns to naught. I started out by creating an article outline. Every week–every Monday–I plan to sit down and plan out my articles for the week. The outline consists of ideas, not titles. Included are the different Moronacity channels, my two Examiner columns–I was just accepted to be the National Healthy Living Examiner, or something like that–and … Read entire article »

Interactive Star Map and Online Planetarium

Wintertime is a great time to stargaze, at least in mid-Michigan. When the sky is clear and the air is freezing, the stars shine brightly and one can gaze at the Milky Way and beyond. I must clarify that I live in the countryside in mid-Michigan and the light from surrounding cities is faint. I can see a lot, here. It’s not like living in the UP, but it can be pretty awesome. I would like to test drive this little guy, tonight, but the dreary skies tell me this may not happen until another day. That doesn’t mean I can’t share this with you. London, England’s Paul Neave created the “Neave Planetarium.” You click on your little section of the world and look … Read entire article »

Outdoor Recreation is Gloomy Business in Michigan

Outdoor Recreation is Gloomy Business in Michigan

I find it funny – funny weird, not funny ha ha — how people look at the Upper Peninsula like it is an uninhabitable place where people freeze off their extremities, roads are nearly impassable, and SAD lights are common. You gotta be tough to live up there! Well, the way I see it . . . . . . is you gotta be tough to live down here in Mid-Michigan. Having lived … Read entire article »

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!

Did You Know? Christmas is 12 days long – December 25 to January 6, which is the Epiphany of our Lord. Some sects of Christianity celebrate Christmas by exchanging gifts on each of the 12 days. In the How Stuff Works article, “What are the 12 days of Christmas,” Sam Abramson says, “Some cultures, like the French and Spanish, celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany with a king’s cake, a coffee cake with purple, green and yellow icing … Read entire article »

Completely Worth It

I returned to the UP on Saturday. I found myself missing my friends and lifestyle and wanted to return home for a little fun in the snow. Little did I know that my timing was perfect. Several of my Houghton friends had thought that I picked a bad day to drive, and they had good reason for it. In hindsight, I think I picked a great day. The trip started with a dry, fast start to the Miller Road Starbucks in Flint. I needed a big, tasty latte to begin my trip. My pumpkin bread, pumpkin spiced latte, and I journeyed northward on I-75 at a pretty darn good pace until about Indian River. This is when the trip got special. I slowed down quite a … Read entire article »
