Art and Swill
My good friend, Mr. Wall, posted a link to The Pour Fool’s “Why I Don’t Drink Budweiser…and Why I’m Not Alone” on Facebook. My burning anti-passion for Budweiser, the King of Swill, compelled me to click on the link. I can’t possibly describe how strong was the desire in me to click on the link. I strongly recommend you drink, I mean, read it; especially if you are a fan of true … Read entire article »

CAMBr Hits Up the Grand Rapids Bike Park
It wouldn’t be fair to talk about the Midwest Mountain Bike Summit and not mention the guys from CAMBr. After all, these guys had such a wonderful time on Saturday (see Velocity), that they pretty much walked away worshiping the Michigan Mountain Biking Association for putting on such a spectacular summit that drew such a freaky crowd. CAMBr is the Chicago Area Mountain Bikers. I really have no clue where the … Read entire article »

Operation Brew Review – Traverse City Edition
On Sunday, August 29, Ali and I decided to head to Traverse City to do a brew review of the different brew pubs. We judged the breweries on five things: friendliness; atmosphere; service; beer; bathroom stall size (we didn’t really check all of them – so four criteria). I chose to rate these on a scale of one to five, with five being the best. Mackinaw Brewing Company The Mackinaw Brewing Company was our first stop. We had just ridden the … Read entire article »

Highland + Beer + Mexican Food + Friends = The Perfect Day
I love Highland. The Highland Recreation Area has some of the best mountain biking trails in Lower Michigan. In fact, Ali placed it in her top five in her blog post, “Loaded.” It is four loops of technical, climbing hell. I love technical. I love that I can climb fast when I am in shape, which is most certainly not the case at this point in time. I don’t love climbing. Ali, Glen and I met at Highland with the plan of doing all of the loops on Monday. In the past, it would take me three hours to ride all four loops. Not only were Ali and Glen a little fatigued from Saturday’s Barry Roubaix, but I … Read entire article »

Exhaustion
It is truly amazing how one can abuse one’s body beyond limitations. I find myself uselessly sitting at my computer, today. I’ve skimmed over the fairly inactive MMBA Forum countless times, today. I have no energy. I am tired. My throat is raw. I nearly gagged on phlegm. Life is full of little goodies. Amanda and I headed down to the Lansing area for the Michigan Mountain Biking Association’s Expo and Annual Meeting. I’ll write more about that, tomorrow. Friday, we arrived in town and headed to my favorite East Lansing bar, Crunchy’s. I was allowed to sing a karaoke song before they closed up for the night – we got there late. We had a couple of beers and … Read entire article »

Sunday Trail Day It’s the week before Christmas . . . er, Fat Tire, and I have the anticipation that a child would have for presents. I have a great week planned, and it has started off properly, considering the climactic event. Yesterday was the weekly Copper Harbor trail day. I showed up early to assist Rachel with providing breakfast for the trail crew, then I headed out with Sam, Sam, and Ann for some pre-race trail cleanup. Last year, this highly motivated kid and his mom showed up for trail day. We all remember them because the kid’s name is Sam, just like Keweenaw Adventure Sam, and they were working together building new trail. I was surprised to see Sam and his mother join us, again. … Read entire article »

Momentary Lapse of Willpower . . . Strange Revival
Beer . . . or ride? Hm . . . well, I could sneak a ride in tomorrow even though I’m on call. I’ve done it several times before. I used to do it all the time when I worked full time and fifty percent of my free time really wasn’t free at all . . . because I was on call. That beer really sounds good. I don’t know if I’ve told you this, but I’ve given up beer until Fat Tire weekend (that is Labor Day weekend for you non-cycling folk). My friend, Pat, is trying to lose five pounds before the race, and I’m trying to get down to 165 pounds. I was 175 a couple days ago, and it might very … Read entire article »

12 Hours of Potluck
I overheard someone asking why it is called the 12 Hours of Potluck. Yes, it used to be a potluck. It no longer is a race-wide potluck, but that doesn’t stop groups of friends from sharing their food and beer. The race is held down by Lake Superior at Harlow Lake. The course was actually quite fun, but there was a tremendous pain element involved. It started out fairly level and fast. Eventually the uphill – the long, long, uphill – wound through the woods and almost to the very top, known as “The Top of the World.†We raced down Jedi – a super long downhill reward for completing the super long uphill punishment. Jedi was the part I really loved. It … Read entire article »
