Please Apply, Again!
Yesterday’s IMBA classroom work was quite interesting. Today, we applied what we learned. We built a trail on Michigan Nature Association property attaching to the Garden Brook multi-use trail. The results were interesting. The trail crew. I say interesting, because our IMBA trail crew was quite surprised. Let’s consider the facts: 50 people, quite possibly the largest trail school, ever, and the largest this year, showed up; We are the only trail crew they’ve seen … Read entire article »
Gotta Get Drunk
It took a while to get out the door, but I finally managed to arrive in Copper Harbor in time for the group ride with our IMBA friends. I really wasn’t feeling it, though. I climbed Garden Brook with everyone, and split from the group to ride down the Red Trail. I . . . was . . . tired. I finally discovered why I’ve been feeling sluggish (girl stuff), and decided to just go with it. There is no shame in doing a short ride (short being 90 minutes) when in Copper Harbor. One thing is for sure, the climbing is there. We finished off the evening with a free spaghetti dinner provided by The Mariner North followed by a one-man band in the park on … Read entire article »

IMBA Ride
Kelly and Collins Bishop are visiting the Keweenaw to conduct the IMBA Trail School in Copper Harbor, this weekend. Forty-five to fifty people will be attending this workshop. Kelly and Collins arrived last night and began their introductory tour of the Keweenaw trails this morning. They had a morning ride at Michigan Tech and an evening ride and potluck with the Keweenaw cyclists this evening at Churning Rapids. “These are great trails,” and “this has great flow” were often heard from Collins throughout the evening. They head up to the Swedetown trails in Calumet, tomorrow morning, for a nice, flowy ride followed by a spectacular lunch at the Michigan House. Tomorrow morning, I will finish my packing and grocery shopping, and head up to … Read entire article »

Screw Mary – There’s Something About Copper Harbor!
I really couldn’t afford it, but I decided to chance it, anyway. I couldn’t help myself. I drove up to the Harbor and joined in on the group ride. Unfortunately, I hadn’t ridden since Saturday, so I was lacking energy last night. I just didn’t feel like pedaling. I had a great time rolling down the Red Trail, but decided to separate from the rest of the group when they started heading for Dancing Bear . . . to climb. I took a few friends to Ma Maki, headed over Cliffs and Bridges – where Rachel endoed and fell face down into bedrock – and swooped down Stairway to Heaven. Even though I was totally lazy, it was a breakthrough ride because I … Read entire article »

Copper Harbor – A Photo Essay
Seagulls on a cool, calm day. The rest of those seagulls hanging out on the docks in Copper Harbor. Where Hunter’s Point meets Porter’s Island. Geese floating around the Isle Royale/Keweenaw Adventure Company kayaking dock. Geese thinking I’m going to feed them. Making a splash. Nelson showing off his cool stroke. Paddling along the edge of the Harbor. Kayaker waiting to begin the group paddle back to Hunter’s Point. Sunset paddle on the 4th of July. Sunset paddle. Sun setting beyond Copper Harbor. … Read entire article »

Thimbleberry Jam Festival
None of the Thimbleberries are out, yet, but that didn’t stop Copper Harbor from throwing their annual Thimbleberry Jam Festival. The turnout was small, mostly due to the cool, wet weather. I was very happy to hear that one of my CH friends, Rachel, had paid off her new Marin mountain bike and was leading rides around the Mountain Lodge Trails. I have to say, her bike is pretty sweet. I’m thinking I want one, but that would involve giving up one of my other bikes. I think I’ll just fix up my old bike. The night was long and full of fun. We headed to the Mariner for live music and plenty of beer. We socialized, danced, and – get this – moshed. … Read entire article »

My Honeymoon
I feel like I just returned from my honeymoon, which is funny because I’ve never had a honeymoon. Just bear with me, here. Like all great honeymoons, I had one great ride . . . actually, several. I’ve been riding, but more effort has been a requirement to get me out on the trail, lately. I just haven’t felt like riding. I went up to Copper Harbor for the Thursday night group … Read entire article »

Nothing to Do But Ride a Bike
Today was just like the camping days of my childhood. There really wasn’t much to do but ride my bike! I would ride, come back for food, get bored, and then ride again. I went out three times and rode twenty-two miles in Copper Harbor. It was a blast! Moronacity.com … Read entire article »

Fourth of July Celebration – A Photo Essay
Copper Harbor fireworks as seen from my kayak. It was such a long day, it seemed like two. I started the day off walking the dogs to Ft Wilkins State Park and back. I heard sirens toward the end of the walk indicating the fine Copper Harbor parade had begun. I rushed back, put the dogs away, and watched a parade truly in Harbor fashion. Indian Paintbrush grows all over the Keweenaw. This … Read entire article »

Nice To See You Again, Paul!
Thursday night group ride in Copper Harbor . . . the three of us, the girls, broke off from the rest of the group to do a “B” group ride. We did the first part of the Fat Tire course backward . . . well, sort of. We went the wrong way, thanks to me, and ended up at the beginning of Paul’s Plunge. “It’s a sign!” I said. They agreed, and we progressed down that ever-so-gnarly trail. I led, and I finally reached the top of the plunge and laid my bike down to walk the plunge in an effort to psyche myself to do it. Amanda went flying by and I just said, “Feck it, I’ll follow you!” I got on the … Read entire article »
