The Great Balancing Act
Until August 8, I did not have a job for two years. The MMBA does not count. Sure, it is a “full-time” job on occasion, but it is one that I can do at 2 a.m. if my heart so desires. Now, I work 8 to 5, ride afterward, and fail miserably at getting enough sleep. How do I fit it all in?Part of it is commute time. I had … Read entire article »

A Di Day – Mountain Style
I did a bit of a Di day, today. My morning centered around a nice, carb-rich breakfast and preparation for a bike ride. It was beautiful and sunny, I really had no obligations, so I was going to spend a few hours with the bike. The plan was to ride to the Tech Trails from my house, do a couple of loops, and head back home. I had to detour to The Bike Shop to get something done, so that was destination one. It took me about 35 minutes to make the journey from home to The Bike Shop. I brought the bike in and had a seat on another bike and chatted with Caleb while he put together a $4,000 tri bike. Wow. … Read entire article »

Sacrificing to Live, Love, and Play
Up In Alaska: Jill’s Subarctic Journal is one of my favorite blogs. Jill is a journalist who is currently promoting her book, Ghost Trails: Journeys through a lifetime. What I enjoy about Jill’s blog is that she is someone I can relate to – someone who lives in snow land and likes to ride – but someone I can’t even begin to motivate myself to aspire to be. However, Jill’s dedication really isn’t unobtainable, and I completely realize that. This is why her experiences serve as inspiration to me. Jill is currently going through a life change similar to what I recently experienced. She has resigned from her journalist position with the hope of moving to Anchorage and is receiving a lot of pressure from her … Read entire article »

SAFE!
Everything was packed, from my freshly waxed skis to my sauna towel to my shampoo and conditioner. I was good to go. I got out of class and, as I was walking to my car, I realized that I had forgotten my ski cap and my gator. Go figure. With a wind chill in the upper teens, I didn’t want to go without my gator. My lungs wouldn’t appreciate that. They like the incoming warmed air. I had to think fast. I had to work out. I…went to the SDC and weight trained for 20 minutes. I hit the sauna, showered, and made my way to dinner. Nice save. … Read entire article »

Make It Happen
Today officially began my winter training regimen. I decided to pack my duffle bag with my gym gear and take it to Tech with me. As a tradeoff, I accidentally left my backpack with my biochemistry stuff at home. That’s ok. I knew I had to make today happen, rather than just letting today occur. I chose to pack my forgotten backpack last night. I prepared pancake mix the day before yesterday and prepped the coffee pot last night. Whenever I have to get up early, I need coffee. This morning, I woke up at 5:30, threw some pancake mix in the pan, started the coffee pot, and provided breakfast for the dogs. I ate two pancakes, drank a mug of coffee, let … Read entire article »

Therapy
Most students are relieved when Friday rolls around. Their busy, weekly schedules come to an end. Saturday brings free time – time to play, time to catch up on homework, time to just do nothing. Things are a little different for me. With Saturday and Sunday comes more time already spent. I have a lot of reading to do over the weekend, but my obligations and commitments are presenting a bit of an obstacle. Throw in finding time to ride, and time management turns into a jigsaw puzzle. I’m not very good at those. Today, I woke up to a bright, beautiful morning. I was quite pleased to see the sun shining and the temperature quite near to 70 degrees F. One … Read entire article »

Prioritizing
It probably comes to no surprise by you that cycling is a top priority for me. However, it is taking a backseat, today. It is almost painful. It is beautiful and warm in the Keweenaw. It is almost 70 degrees F. I really want to ride. I need to ride. I am not allowing myself to ride. Why? Let’s take a couple of things into consideration. My total bike time is about four to six hours. It takes me about a half-hour to an hour to prep for my ride, including food, gear, and dogs. My actual ride time take about two to three hours, followed by a shower and stretching – another hour. By not biking, I can … Read entire article »

Going By Bike
This is my first week back at Michigan Tech for the fall semester. I couldn’t commute, Tuesday, because I had to exchange a textbook and get another one. The load would’ve been too much for my shoulders to handle for a total of nineteen miles. Ick. Yesterday was my first day bicycle commuting. I was creative. I had to get to an 8 a.m. class, which is nearly impossible for me, anyway, as I am quite the opposite of a morning person. I also had to start work at 1:30 p.m. The hospital is six miles from my home, and Tech is nine and a half. I chose to drive to work and park there. I rode my bike into school. … Read entire article »

Ride ‘n Lop
I set out, yesterday, with fellow mountain biker, Dan, to commute via rail-to-trail to Calumet to help lop some of the Swedetown trails in preparation for the upcoming Great Deer Chase. Six of us set out on bikes to lop trails. Dan and I cleared the Lakeview Trail. See Dan lop. This picture is also proof that I was there. Dan and I enjoyed our commute homeward via rail-to-trail … Read entire article »

Day One
It’s Monday, so this is the first day of the week for me. I rode for two hours and forty minutes. This is a great start to reaching that ten hour mark! I rode Churning Rapids, again, and managed to squeeze out a little more mileage. I hit twenty. Man, I feel good. I’m pretty optimistic about the upcoming week. I plan to ride Michigan Tech tomorrow, so that may … Read entire article »
