Mountain Biking Can Serve as a Weight-Bearing Activity and Promote Bone Density
This article was first published on August 12, 2009 as part of my Examiner column. Weight-bearing exercise is recommended because it promotes bone health and slows the development of osteoporosis, which is the decrease of bone density due to mineral loss. According to the article, “Exercising with osteoporosis: Stay active the safe way,” by the Mayo Clinic Staff, “Weight-bearing aerobic activities involve doing aerobic exercise on your feet, with your bones supporting your weight … Read entire article »

Mountain Biking IS a Weight-Bearing Activity
It has been my personal opinion, for quite some time, that mountain biking is a weight-bearing activity. I’ve had many mountain bikers refute this because, after all, we are just cyclists. We sit and we pedal. I call shenanigans. I know that I stand a lot when I ride. I know that I must wear super-stiff shoes, or my feet will hurt really badly from supporting my weight. I know that I can use a really crappy saddle on my mountain bike because I don’t sit on it enough to cause any discomfort. I know that all of this is evidence that mountain biking is a weight-bearing activity. This is really important to me because mountain biking is all I really care … Read entire article »

Putting A Positive Spin On It
I have been full of empty little promises to myself. I’ve been struggling to eat well and lose weight along with failing miserably at getting enough exercise. I gave myself permission to be really bad for my birthday, but decided that things had to change. I love to go out. I need social interaction and Coriander, my little, red dachshund, really isn’t gifted in the art of conversation, although she tries. When I go to The Library, I almost always get involved with a fun conversation. There are some other regulars who I really enjoy keeping company with. The problem is that massive beer consumption is almost always a part of the fun, and that is quite the problem where my waistline is concerned. It was … Read entire article »

I Just Want Healthy Cereal!
My favorite cereals are produced right here in Michigan. That’s great! I love buying foods that support the local economy – from the town level to the state level. Heck, I even prefer Wisconsin cheese over California cheese because Wisconsin, well, it is pretty local. I don’t eat a lot of cereal, but the cereal faces the bread in the store where I shop, and I felt a bit of a craving for it when I picked up a couple of loaves of 7-grain yumminess. It probably had something to with the fact that I came into a nice sum of money and I knew I didn’t have to do the math in my head as I put items in the cart – kind of like a … Read entire article »

Catching Up on Sleep
I was a happy camper, last night. I was cozy on the couch with my dogs and we were watching three hours of House. Okay, I was watching House. The dogs were snoozing as they fought for real estate on the couch with my legs. I felt exhausted during the first episode. My body felt heavy and I found it difficult to get off the couch to … Read entire article »

From Prozac to Road: Cycling for Happiness
It is amazing how a vigorous ride to school sucked all the stress out of my body. I would sit in my 9 a.m. class with a runner’s high and not a care in the world. I also felt an incredible sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. This is a far cry from what I used to experience in my daily life. Ten years ago, I was an overly-stressed, directionless student searching for accomplishment. … Read entire article »

Stabbing at Local VA Clinic
No one gave their opinion on yesterday’s post, so I will present my opinion Wednesday. That gives all four of my readers the great opportunity to voice their opinion about the Shootout. Just kidding. I have more than four readers. I haven’t ridden since I last rode. I can’t remember when that was. Looking at my log, it was Thursday when I had to ride to the VA Clinic … Read entire article »

Cast Iron Dream
A couple of men have argued with me that added iron is quite unhealthy for my diet. “Iron is something we don’t need an excess of.” That’s fine and dandy, but as a menstruating female who has felt the effects of anemia, iron is Heaven on Earth. It is no wonder that my carnivorous side overwhelmingly takes control of me after a ride. This is evident towards the end of a … Read entire article »

Protein-Packed Quinoa
I have a box of quinoa that has been sitting in my cupboard for three years. I bought it because I read that it was good for you. I never opened it . . . until the other day. I was in the mood for chicken noodle soup. The only problem I have with chicken noodle soup is that it is so watery without enough substance to it. Of course, … Read entire article »

Tea and Weight Loss
For many of us, spring is equated with weight loss. It is time to get rid of that winter weight, but how? In theory, it is an easy concept: burn more calories than you take in. Putting this into practice is a different story, however. Our metabolisms are as individual as we are. Our physical compositions – muscle versus fat, endocrine function, and sex are just a few of the many … Read entire article »
