Devoid of Di
Many wonderful, mountain biking-related opportunities occurred this past weekend: National Trails Day; High Country Pathway ride and camping trip; Hanson Hills CPS race. I did not participate in any of these events. It’s really quite sad. I’ve participated in National Trails Day activities since I began doing trail work in 2007. I was absent, this past weekend. I was supposed to go to the High Country Pathway ride and possibly show up at Hanson Hills to cheer on some friends. Again, I was absent. Why? Well. I’ve been sick. I started out with general crabbiness on Monday and Tuesday. I don’t know if that is related to my illness, but it really isn’t far-fetched. I was still feeling out of sorts. Wednesday, I … Read entire article »

To Go, or Not to Go? That is the Question.
I have a bit of a dilemma. I am sick. Tomorrow, I will have been sick for three weeks with a sore throat for all but two days. I’ve dropped out of two mountain bike rides – Sunday’s Copper Harbor ride and last night’s Monday night ride – because I just didn’t have the energy. I feel worn down. I feel useless. Ugh describes my physical state quite well. I … Read entire article »

Timing
Timing is an interesting concept. Let’s talk about that. I woke up to a phone call at 1:45 in the morning asking me to come into work to do an ultrasound. Yay. I knew this was going to affect my mountain bike ride I sort of had scheduled the next day. I returned to bed at 3:00 a.m. My riding partner and teammate, Pat, called at 7:45 in the morning. He told me that our ride would have to happen much earlier than he planned. I thought about it for a minute and told him I couldn’t. I had to go to The Bike Shop to drop off my Jamis for its newer bike tune-up, and I needed to put some clipless pedals on my … Read entire article »

Desperate Planning
Looking at the weather forecast, I see that there will be a little clear up in the weather tomorrow evening. I fully intend to take advantage of that little window of partly cloudy, 50-degree weather. I still have quite a cough, but my energy level is up and my voice is returning. Either way, I am desperate to return to cycling. … Read entire article »

I Did Enjoy the Burger
You’d think I would learn by now. I was going to participate in rides the last two days, and both days I chose not to ride because I felt kind of strange. At first, I thought I was having a bit of an iron deficiency. After all, I have restricted my calorie intake in favor of weight loss, and I have been getting a fair amount of physical activity. I snowblowed for 3 ½ hours on Tuesday, for example. Wednesday, I felt a little weak and ever-so-slightly woozy. It wasn’t enough to make me think that anything was really wrong, but I felt that a burger (red meat = iron) was to be on the menu. I ended up socializing and drinking beer … Read entire article »

Time to Revise
Today marks the fifth day that I am sick. Yay. I haven’t had exercise for ten days, now. This is due in combination to preparing for the expo, traveling, and being sick. I have to do some necessary work: wood splitting and a twenty-minute snow blow, but that doesn’t really count. I’m a little upset about this lack of exercise for one huge reason: weight. Therefore, I am using today to not only catch up on my studies, writing, and housework, but to devise a plan (read: menu) to get me through these days of inactivity. Even if I feel well, tomorrow, I won’t be able to do anything because I have to be available for the hospital. … Read entire article »
