Best of Moronacity—2011

The Best of 2011 was pretty easy to review, but not because of all of the wonderful content. It turned out to be a pretty uninspired year, so I didn’t post very much. Even so, I managed to find a few gems. This is a year-in-review for Moronacity Cycling. Three best of lists follow. Links will open in a new window. Di’s Abridged History of Wheels

Di’s Abridged History of Wheels

Do you remember what it was like to learn how to ride a bike? I remember my tricycle. I remember my pink, banana-seat Huffy with training wheels. I remember my dad holding onto the back of the bike and running with me while I got started, and then letting go as I rolled down the sidewalk. I remember that my bike was an extension of my body. I rode it … Read entire article »

Thank You, Mountain Bikers!

As I head back to the Upper Peninsula after an unexpectedly long, two-month hiatus from the Keweenaw life, I would like to thank quite a few people who have been there for me while I’ve been away from home. Ali B. – for giving me a place to stay for Iceman, even though I never made it there. Andrea D. – for providing excellent constructive criticism for the brochure. Brad H. – for helping me when I broke my bike. Chris M. – for carpooling with me to the trails conference, and for lending me a bike and giving me a tour of Anderson Park and Burchfield. Dave C. – for the awesome tour of the Tree Farm. John R. – for putting a roof over my head for several days, giving me a tour of … Read entire article »

I Will Be Strong

There really is no excuse for having a poor season. I am blessed with a body that responds quickly to a little gravitational abuse followed by protein consumption. With a little work, I am a fairly respectable mountain biker. Over the last week, I have noticed quite a difference in my climbing ability. Compared to last year, I have a few things going against me: • I haven’t been riding much. • I am 20 pounds heavier. • I’ve been severely lacking in motivation. • I’ve had a lot of personal issues to work through. Recent changes in my life have given me new hope. I am now a full-time freelance writer with another job prospect on the horizon. While I am still building the foundation of my career, I am envisioning … Read entire article »

Susan Nelson – God Grant You Peace

Susan Nelson – God Grant You Peace

August 5th was the day that Susan Nelson passed away (Don’t Say She Lost). She was well known to thousands of people through the blog of her husband, Elden, the Fat Cyclist, and was someone that the Fat Cyclist readers fell in love with. Her love and dedication to her family was mirrored by the love of her husband. Susan, may God grant you and your family peace. ____________________ Michigan Mountain Biking Examiner: Susan Nelson … Read entire article »

Whirlwind

Whirlwind

My mind is a whirlwind. The best thing to do with a whirlwind mind is to keep it busy. Don’t let it think. Thinking is bad. Thinking gets one into trouble. Maybe that’s why so many people from so many places have called me that. True story. Last night, I solicited a response from someone. This morning, I knew that response would be promptly waiting for me. … Read entire article »

Home Alone: AAAAHHH!

I thought I was making a wise decision. I was heading to Copper Harbor for two days to help out with the Hog Festival, a motorcycle event that is a fundraiser for the Copper Harbor Improvement Association. I decided to pack responsibly, so I checked the weather forecast so I could make an informed decision on whether to take my bikes. Thunderstorms were forecasted for each day, so I left the bikes at home. Let’s step back and take a quick reality check. There are a several things I should always consider: • I hardly ever leave Copper Harbor on the intended day. • The weather forecast in the Keweenaw is often wrong. • I should know better than to go anywhere without the bike(s). Here is the reality: • I left … Read entire article »

Fourth of July Weekend – Part III

My Sunday was not very exciting. We’ll skip that. Monday, I went for a ride with Rachel and Cory. I really enjoyed it. Riding with Rachel is fun because it’s not super serious and we take the time to stop and ride those parts that are hardest for us. We rode some Copper Harbor singletrack and headed back into town for lunch at the Harbor Haus. I really enjoyed the Harbor Haus lunch. Trash (Brian) joined us (yay!). That made me really happy because I haven’t been able to spend any time with him. We vented over a superb lunch. We shared our plans for the future and offered support for one-another. It was actually quite productive, I think. Tuesday, I got up and … Read entire article »
