Fourth of July Weekend—Part II—A Photo Essay

Fourth of July Weekend—Part II—A Photo Essay

Fourth of July was conveniently on a Saturday—not like that really mattered to the girl who took a five-day weekend. I awoke not so bright and early to meet up with Johanna and the camera crew. Long story short, we drove around the Harbor getting video and pictures. Tim was nice enough to lend me his camera to take the following photos. On with the photo essay. Tim and Craig shooting video … Read entire article »

A Di Day – Mountain Style

I did a bit of a Di day, today. My morning centered around a nice, carb-rich breakfast and preparation for a bike ride. It was beautiful and sunny, I really had no obligations, so I was going to spend a few hours with the bike. The plan was to ride to the Tech Trails from my house, do a couple of loops, and head back home. I had to detour to The Bike Shop to get something done, so that was destination one. It took me about 35 minutes to make the journey from home to The Bike Shop. I brought the bike in and had a seat on another bike and chatted with Caleb while he put together a $4,000 tri bike. Wow. … Read entire article »

Metaphorical Mountain Biking

Tire tracks are like the path of life. They run through smooth sections of trail, over roots, rocks, through water, up mountains, and down hills. The occasional smooth section of trail can be a welcome break. It is the opportunity to go faster with less effort, and we can reach for some water or food and allow the lungs to rest up a bit. However, smooth trail can be overdone. After a while, it becomes monotonous and sucks all joy and happiness out of us. It is no longer exciting. It is not rest, but work. It turns into a mental struggle. Life can be the same way. Think about what it is like to start a new job. It is … Read entire article »

Mackinaw Bridge in February – A Short Photo Essay

Mackinaw Bridge in February – A Short Photo Essay

Amanda and I stopped on what seemed to be a seasonal road to look at the Mackinaw Bridge while returning from Lansing on February 23. Here are some pictures from that evening. … Read entire article »

Exhaustion

It is truly amazing how one can abuse one’s body beyond limitations. I find myself uselessly sitting at my computer, today. I’ve skimmed over the fairly inactive MMBA Forum countless times, today. I have no energy. I am tired. My throat is raw. I nearly gagged on phlegm. Life is full of little goodies. Amanda and I headed down to the Lansing area for the Michigan Mountain Biking Association’s Expo and Annual Meeting. I’ll write more about that, tomorrow. Friday, we arrived in town and headed to my favorite East Lansing bar, Crunchy’s. I was allowed to sing a karaoke song before they closed up for the night – we got there late. We had a couple of beers and … Read entire article »

Cold and Tough

I’ve had something weighing heavily on my mind, lately. To be truthful, I’m a little hurt. I’ve spent the last two days in limbo between hurt and searching for a way out of that hole. Today, I’m cold. I mean, while I am literally cold because it is 55 degrees in my house as I try to warm it with the wood stove, I am finding that, emotionally, I am taking a turn for the colder. This is a part of the healing process. This is how I protect myself. Today is the perfect day to become cold, tough Di. Just to keep you guys on your toes, I don’t mean this figuratively. Literally, I am going to be cold and … Read entire article »

Operation Motivation

Those of you who regularly read this blog know that I’ve been quite unsuccessfully searching for that motivation I lost so many months ago (ahem, September). I was lectured in the brewpub about how I was missing out on some great snow by not skiing. That kind of stuck with me a bit. It got the gears working. Then, the unexpected happened: my motivation came back! I am generally a cheerful person, but I no longer had that zest for life that made the last three years of my Keweenaw life so spectacular. I was no longer excited about…anything. At first, I was a bit concerned that depression would take hold of my life. That is something I have absolutely no … Read entire article »

It’s a Good Day

I was sitting at the KBC chatting with an old acquaintance and having a great time drinking my brew. My “I’m only have one” turned into two. Copper Harbor Amanda ran over and was a bit surprised to see me because I was supposed to be in Copper Harbor. I held up my glass and said, “I’m packing!” What’s really cool is that everyone I saw and knew there was having a good time. It was a good day for all of us, and “it’s a good day” was being repeated by several people. It truly is a good day. It’s about time. … Read entire article »

Sacrificing to Live, Love, and Play

Up In Alaska: Jill’s Subarctic Journal is one of my favorite blogs. Jill is a journalist who is currently promoting her book, Ghost Trails: Journeys through a lifetime. What I enjoy about Jill’s blog is that she is someone I can relate to – someone who lives in snow land and likes to ride – but someone I can’t even begin to motivate myself to aspire to be. However, Jill’s dedication really isn’t unobtainable, and I completely realize that. This is why her experiences serve as inspiration to me. Jill is currently going through a life change similar to what I recently experienced. She has resigned from her journalist position with the hope of moving to Anchorage and is receiving a lot of pressure from her … Read entire article »

The Art of Snow Blowing

The Art of Snow Blowing

Somehow, I get the feeling that many of you have never blown snow. I’m talking about the white stuff that falls from the sky and using a fun, mechanical contraption that broadcasts the snow out of the area to be cleared. Snow blowing is very much a part of my life, especially when returning from a week-long trip to Marquette. Early Saturday morning, I arrived home and parked my vehicle on the road. … Read entire article »
