Six Random Things
Andrea tagged me to post up six random things that people don’t know about me. I don’t think this is going to be that easy because I think everyone already knows a lot about me. Okay. Here goes. • I first went to Lansing Community College for the education transfer program to Michigan State. I wanted to be a teacher my whole life. It didn’t pan out. I’m glad. • I never thought I was smart enough to be a doctor. I placed the position high on a pedestal and I thought it was completely unobtainable by me. Look at me, now. • I am much more of a leader than I like to admit. I ask a lot of questions and like people … Read entire article »

Gratitude
My dad came to visit for Thanksgiving, leaving mom and my brothers behind in Lower Michigan. This picture is mostly for them so they can see what they missed. Thanksgiving is something many try to force on a national holiday by making lists. Thanksgiving is something I don’t necessarily feel on the holiday, itself, but it is worth reflecting on those times I’ve felt true, deep gratitude, and how those … Read entire article »

Inspiration Fuels Dreams
Satellite and cable television offer the weird opportunity to watch television shows in an odd manner, such as three episodes of House in a row. That is what I did before writing this. After House, I found Grey’s Anatomy on Lifetime, right where I left off before I could no longer watch it on network television. How exciting! I used to watch Grey’s Anatomy every week. I could take it or leave … Read entire article »

At Least the Bike Was Okay
I debated sharing this with anyone, and I slowly had a change of heart the more I realized how great of a story this really is. It also answers that question, “What if?” I called my mother to let her know what happened. “Is Dad there?” “Yeah, why? Do need to talk to him?” paraphrasing Mom. “No, just wondering. I got my snowblower started. Worked great. I did the tire tracks in my driveway.” “Oh, good! At least you know can get out of there.” I chuckled a little replying with a, “Yeah.” Mom has no clue. She doesn’t know why I called her or has any idea what happened to me today. In a way, it is a blessing in disguise. You see, … Read entire article »

Nature’s Art Lost on Amateurs
Amateur! Yeah, I said it, and in a derogatory fashion, as well. I usually hit the Aftermath Café on Michigan Tech’s campus before my physics class for a personal pizza and some caffeine. I usually do a little studying as well. I almost always overhear interesting conversations. Lately, most of the conversations have been political in nature. I find it quite sad that many of these new adults, these amateurs of life, have more hate and bias within themselves than they will probably ever realize. In fact, listening to them, as a 31-year-old adult, brings about the realization of just how judgmental and irrational I was as a young adult. Age often softens the soul bringing about tolerance, although I hope that respect is … Read entire article »

Cows and the Economy
Moo. I like cows. That is no secret. Actually, allow me to correct myself. I love cows. I’m not terribly fond of the smell of fresh bovine manure on fields, but other than that, the cow is a wonderful animal. • They are cute. • They moo. (mooing is funny) • They taste good. • They produce milk. • They moo. Even while riding my bike, I have had the opportunity to appreciate cows. On one of my routes, I pass a cow farm that produces milk for Jilbert’s Dairy. I think that’s pretty cool and it’s one of the highlights of my ride. It is my immense appreciation for the cow that is the reason why I enjoyed a fairly recent email from my brother. It is called The … Read entire article »

Winter Wonderland
Today was the second day of snow accumulation in the Keweenaw. I drove Amanda home to Copper Harbor. It was a little tricky. The roads were getting covered and the snowplows were out. We found ourselves traveling behind a Keweenaw County snow plow on the covered road leading to Copper Harbor. Amanda and I decided to have a little fun and go for a hike. We took the dogs to the … Read entire article »

Grrl’s Night
It was suggested a couple months ago that we hold a grrls’ night at my house. I chose this weekend for the festivities. Only two of us were able to show up. It only happens on rare occasions, but I was actually on time for this little get-together. The fact that the meeting place was my house may have had something to do with that. I still hadn’t washed my … Read entire article »

Meltdown Meets Solution
Some of you may think it’s kind of unusual how I haven’t been very devoted to my blog, lately, or that I haven’t been taking much time to comment on the MMBA forum. You’ve read about my evasion of the U.P. Cyclocross Championships, and my inability to make an actual ride happen, either due to weather, school, or lack of energy. I may not have put it like that, but I have pretty much been experiencing a meltdown. I felt fat, unattractive, lazy, unhealthy, unhappy, and just plain “un.” Due to the timing of my very busy schedule and our very unwelcome rainy weather, I haven’t been able to really ride in three weeks. Anyone who regularly rides knows that missing three weeks of intense activity can … Read entire article »

Vote 2008
As I write this, MSNBC (link not provided because they aren’t a real news source) has already handed electoral votes over to Obama. Fox News, on the other hand, has merely given the current percentages with the percentage of precincts reporting. Personally, I love seeing the press being proven wrong, which is why I cherish the 2000 Presidential election so much. I arrived at the polls at 8:30, this morning. I quickly got my ballot and sat down for a thorough reading and marking. After fifteen minutes, I fed it through the machine and headed off to work. It was effortless. This was the fourth presidential election I’ve voted in thus far. The first, a race between Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, … Read entire article »
