Bicycle Tour of Durand Part III — A Photo Essay

Bicycle Tour of Durand Part III — A Photo Essay

This is the final installment of my photo essay of the home of the Railroaders. “Around the turn of the century, as many as thirty-five passenger trains, one hundred freight trains and three thousand passengers used the depot each day.” Signal tower near downtown Durand. An engine. A caboose – something you don’t see much of these days. A rather odd little drinking fountain. They should have chosen a bear, instead. The Durand Memorial Library. … Read entire article »

Bicycle Tour of Durand Part II — A Photo Essay

Durand Union Station The Durand Depot was built in 1903 and later rebuilt in 1905 following a fire. More than 100 years later, it serves as an Amtrak stop between Port Huron and Chicago. Of course, I had to stop and take a gander while I was doing my bicycle tour of Durand. “On March 27, 1960, Grand Trunk Western train No. 56 left the depot for Detroit. It was the last regularly-scheduled passenger … Read entire article »

Bicycle Tour of Durand Part I — A Photo Essay

My road ride commenced in a rather unsurprising manner—something like this: Yeah, even the Shiawassee County squirrels are suicidal. I was climbing a hill on Bancroft Road when a squirrel decided to run in front of me. It was cool because there was plenty of clearance between me and Mr. Squirrel. It was Mr. Squirrel’s friend who chose to dive-bomb in front of my wheel in an effort to graze the tire. … Read entire article »

Whirlwind

Whirlwind

My mind is a whirlwind. The best thing to do with a whirlwind mind is to keep it busy. Don’t let it think. Thinking is bad. Thinking gets one into trouble. Maybe that’s why so many people from so many places have called me that. True story. Last night, I solicited a response from someone. This morning, I knew that response would be promptly waiting for me. … Read entire article »

Copperman Triathlon Having had only four hours of sleep due to unforeseen circumstances, I headed to Copper Harbor with a coffee and a Coca Cola for my pre-race meal. I arrived to the Copperman start area at 8:30, a half hour before the commencement of the race. My teammates were freaking out and demonstrated an obvious rush of relief at my arrival. I got my race packet, headed back to my vehicle, detoured to the general store for two chocolate milks, and back to the start area to join my teammates. Let me make this clear. My pre-race preparatory ritual was four hours of sleep, a late arrival, a few sips of coffee, a bottle of Coke, and two chocolate milks. Let me make it clear that … Read entire article »

Saginaw Valley Rail Trail

Saginaw Valley Rail Trail

Today brought sunshine, a light breeze, and perfect temperatures. I headed up to (ha ha) St. Charles with my parents and my brother. St. Charles marks a trailhead for the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail. This particular rail trail is a flat, paved, 9 ½-mile trail that runs through farmland in the Saginaw Valley (are you getting the part where this is in the Saginaw Valley?). Most … Read entire article »

Zack’s Not-So-Good Friday

On Wednesday, April 8, the proverbial shit hit the fan when Michigan State University International Relations and Journalism major Zack Colman wrote a rather controversial opinion article for the State News. I’m pretty sure that Zack had no clue what he was setting himself up for. Zack delivered lines such as Black 2001 Saturn SC2. That’s the car I drive — and if you’re a bicyclist on the road but not in a bike path and you see my car, I hope you’re wearing a helmet, because I might run you over. But you see, with all these things I can do in my car nowadays, such as choose a different song on my iPod, send a text message while driving or fall asleep at the wheel because I had to wake … Read entire article »

Hard Work Ahead

With the most recent snow melt, and temperatures reaching the 60s in the Keweenaw, cyclists have already gathered together to ride the road. I just thought about riding, but I fully intend to begin my spring training this coming weekend. Tomorrow and Wednesday, I am going to hit the pavement for a couple of short rides ranging from 60-90 minutes. This will be a little wake-up call for my body – a little message that hard work is coming pretty quickly. Jake (cross bike) and I will be heading down to Marquette, next weekend. I am going to visit a friend, but I’ve decided that this might be the perfect opportunity to try out the bike paths in and around town. My goal is to … Read entire article »
