Race Pace

Sunday Trail Day It’s the week before Christmas . . . er, Fat Tire, and I have the anticipation that a child would have for presents. I have a great week planned, and it has started off properly, considering the climactic event. Yesterday was the weekly Copper Harbor trail day. I showed up early to assist Rachel with providing breakfast for the trail crew, then I headed out with Sam, Sam, and Ann for some pre-race trail cleanup. Last year, this highly motivated kid and his mom showed up for trail day. We all remember them because the kid’s name is Sam, just like Keweenaw Adventure Sam, and they were working together building new trail. I was surprised to see Sam and his mother join us, again. … Read entire article »

Please Apply, Again!

Please Apply, Again!

Yesterday’s IMBA classroom work was quite interesting. Today, we applied what we learned. We built a trail on Michigan Nature Association property attaching to the Garden Brook multi-use trail. The results were interesting. The trail crew. I say interesting, because our IMBA trail crew was quite surprised. Let’s consider the facts: 50 people, quite possibly the largest trail school, ever, and the largest this year, showed up; We are the only trail crew they’ve seen … Read entire article »

IMBA Ride

Kelly and Collins Bishop are visiting the Keweenaw to conduct the IMBA Trail School in Copper Harbor, this weekend. Forty-five to fifty people will be attending this workshop. Kelly and Collins arrived last night and began their introductory tour of the Keweenaw trails this morning. They had a morning ride at Michigan Tech and an evening ride and potluck with the Keweenaw cyclists this evening at Churning Rapids. “These are great trails,” and “this has great flow” were often heard from Collins throughout the evening. They head up to the Swedetown trails in Calumet, tomorrow morning, for a nice, flowy ride followed by a spectacular lunch at the Michigan House. Tomorrow morning, I will finish my packing and grocery shopping, and head up to … Read entire article »

Ride ‘n Lop

Ride ‘n Lop

I set out, yesterday, with fellow mountain biker, Dan, to commute via rail-to-trail to Calumet to help lop some of the Swedetown trails in preparation for the upcoming Great Deer Chase. Six of us set out on bikes to lop trails. Dan and I cleared the Lakeview Trail. See Dan lop. This picture is also proof that I was there. Dan and I enjoyed our commute homeward via rail-to-trail … Read entire article »

Copper Harbor Trail Day

Copper Harbor Trail Day

It wasn’t just a trail day, though. It was also the annual town party at the top of Brockway Mountain. We gathered there with legal beverages and cameras in hand and watched the sunset. Well, we kind of watched the sunset as we hacky sacked. It’s not uncommon to see the residents and friends of Copper Harbor kicking around a hacky sack. Beer doesn’t really help with coordination. Here is a short photo … Read entire article »

National Trails Day in Copper Harbor

National Trails Day in Copper Harbor

Tammi and Dee raking on the Dancing Bear trail in Copper Harbor. No blog entry yesterday . . . no, I was out making the story happen. It all started at 6 a.m. when I dragged my butt out of bed for National Trails Day. I gathered my gear, had a healthy breakfast, made a healthy lunch, filled the Camelbak, and hopped in the Pathfinder to head for the Ace Hardware in Calumet. … Read entire article »

Trail Day Checklist

Tomorrow is National Trails Day and I am going to spend it in Copper Harbor. All over the nation, bikers and hikers will be out in full force cleaning up and building trails. If you haven’t been to a trail day before, now is a great time to do it. Trail work can be quite rewarding and very fun. Di and Sandy Aronson on the Gardenbrook bridge in Copper Harbor. Keweenaw Chain Drive Pre-Ride

Keweenaw Chain Drive Pre-Ride

Pat and James after conquering a Maasto Hiihto hill I can’t climb. My team mates James, Pat, and I embarked on a “32-mile” ride today. Our course wasn’t really 32 miles because we were doing the Keweenaw Chain Drive long course sans parade rollout. The “long course” consists partly of all the trails in the Churning Rapids trail system. These are the trails near my home that I will be riding the most … Read entire article »

Volunteer Trail Building

Volunteer Trail Building

Proof that mountain biking season is right around corner can be found on the weekend as riders gather together to clear the trails of debris and make repairs. Those of us who don’t yet have access to dry trails find joy in these trail work sessions partly because it brings us closer to what we love: being on the trail. There is something to be said for caring for the trail one … Read entire article »
