A Pine Embraces a Birch

A Pine Embraces a Birch

Today is diet day number two. I have already lost one pound. All it took was a little exercise and a massive amount of self-control. Fun stuff! Last winter, I read a little bit in Bicycling about a little cheater trick for burning fat. I can’t find the issue with the information in it, but I will pass it on. The advice the article gave (several ideas) was bad advice, and … Read entire article »

No, Not DQ’s Blizzard

No, Not DQ’s Blizzard

Today’s forecast: blizzard. Growing up in lower Michigan, I thought blizzards were reserved for the North Pole, Santa Land, Rudolph and the eight tiny reindeer. Obviously, I was wrong. I have endured through ~four blizzards thus far. Today might have made five, but I don’t think we quite reached blizzard conditions. We don’t necessarily get a lot of snow, but the wind sometimes blows the snow off the road … Read entire article »

It’s All Hype

I came to a realization concerning my training. I felt my cycling routine was getting stagnant, and the dreary, wet weather made me long for snow. We finally got snow. Good snow. In fact, the Michigan Tech Trails now have a nice base layer of snow and people have been skiing for several weeks. I decided to go skiing after church on Sunday. I packed up my things, went to Mass, and headed to the ski trail for my inaugural skate of the 2008-2009 season. I was nervous. I thought I was going to fall flat on my face. I thought it was going to be difficult and my out-of-shape body was going to rebel. My goal was to do the green … Read entire article »

For the Love of Maple Syrup and Pumpkin Pie

For the Love of Maple Syrup and Pumpkin Pie

It was all because of maple syrup and pumpkin pie. The fact that I had to take a physics exam was part of the equation as well. I donned my cycling gear and headed out for a bike ride to Houghton. Being mostly downhill, I arrived at Michigan Tech after an hour and a detour for a Keweenaw Coop sandwich. The damage to my vehicle from Thursday’s accident was mostly cosmetic. The … Read entire article »

At Least the Bike Was Okay

I debated sharing this with anyone, and I slowly had a change of heart the more I realized how great of a story this really is. It also answers that question, “What if?” I called my mother to let her know what happened. “Is Dad there?” “Yeah, why? Do need to talk to him?” paraphrasing Mom. “No, just wondering. I got my snowblower started. Worked great. I did the tire tracks in my driveway.” “Oh, good! At least you know can get out of there.” I chuckled a little replying with a, “Yeah.” Mom has no clue. She doesn’t know why I called her or has any idea what happened to me today. In a way, it is a blessing in disguise. You see, … Read entire article »

Make It Happen

Today officially began my winter training regimen. I decided to pack my duffle bag with my gym gear and take it to Tech with me. As a tradeoff, I accidentally left my backpack with my biochemistry stuff at home. That’s ok. I knew I had to make today happen, rather than just letting today occur. I chose to pack my forgotten backpack last night. I prepared pancake mix the day before yesterday and prepped the coffee pot last night. Whenever I have to get up early, I need coffee. This morning, I woke up at 5:30, threw some pancake mix in the pan, started the coffee pot, and provided breakfast for the dogs. I ate two pancakes, drank a mug of coffee, let … Read entire article »

Nature’s Art Lost on Amateurs

Amateur! Yeah, I said it, and in a derogatory fashion, as well. I usually hit the Aftermath Café on Michigan Tech’s campus before my physics class for a personal pizza and some caffeine. I usually do a little studying as well. I almost always overhear interesting conversations. Lately, most of the conversations have been political in nature. I find it quite sad that many of these new adults, these amateurs of life, have more hate and bias within themselves than they will probably ever realize. In fact, listening to them, as a 31-year-old adult, brings about the realization of just how judgmental and irrational I was as a young adult. Age often softens the soul bringing about tolerance, although I hope that respect is … Read entire article »

Once Upon a Sunday Afternoon

I had a brilliant idea a couple days ago! I decided to act on it an send the following email out to our community cycling list: It’s going to snow, Sunday. That means one thing: it’s time to ride. I have some great dirt roads around my house that I’d like to explore. I plan to ride my mountain bike because, well, you never know where you’ll end up. Group ride – Sunday afternoon – 3:00 – my house. [Directions to my house inserted here.] This is just a fun, social thing, so don’t be afraid to join in. I’m not looking to set any speed records. Simple appetizer/dessert potluck to follow with coffee and hot cocoa. Nothing big – just … Read entire article »

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland

Today was the second day of snow accumulation in the Keweenaw. I drove Amanda home to Copper Harbor. It was a little tricky. The roads were getting covered and the snowplows were out. We found ourselves traveling behind a Keweenaw County snow plow on the covered road leading to Copper Harbor. Amanda and I decided to have a little fun and go for a hike. We took the dogs to the … Read entire article »
