Atrial Fibrillation Guidelines
By Diane Ursu
Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat caused by an abnormal electrical signal within the atria, the upper chambers of the heart. The atria beat out of sync with the ventricles, the two lower chambers of the heart. Due to the importance of this condition, one should follow the recommended atrial fibrillation guidelines, even after the first episode occurs.Atrial Fibrillation Symptoms
“Although atrial fibrillation itself usually isn’t life-threatening, it is a medical emergency. It can lead to complications,” says the Mayo Clinic in their February 14, 2009 article, “Atrial fibrillation.” The consequence of atrial fibrillation is that it may keep the heart from pumping enough blood to the rest of the body. This can cause the blood pressure to lower and lead to dizziness, weakness, confusion, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
Causes of Atrial Fibrillation
Atrial fibrillation is often caused by cardiovascular disease, so it may be prevented by leading a healthy lifestyle. This includes eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise. Those with hypertension – high blood pressure – should avoid salt or lower its intake. Smoking contributes to the development of plaque deposits and should be avoided. Alcohol has been shown to be beneficial to the cardiovascular system when adhering to the recommended guidelines – not more than one beverage per day for women, and two per day for men.
Atrial Fibrillation Guidelines
Those who have already experienced atrial fibrillation should avoid alcohol and caffeine. Many medications contain stimulants and suppressants, so it is important to discuss medication use with your physician, even with over-the-counter (OTC) medications.
Atrial fibrillation is rarely life-threatening, but should be addressed as soon as possible. Yearly physical exams are useful for finding an atrial fibrillation before it becomes a problem. In addition to yearly check-ups, visit your doctor should any of the following arise: dizziness, weakness, confusion, shortness of breath, and chest pain.
