Arabian Madness
Arabian Horse Breeding and Its Influence
By Diane Ursu

The magic of this ancient breed is reflected in its large, intelligent eyes. The Arabian breed has been around for so long that no one knows its origin. It is the purest breed of horse, today. Its uniqueness and beauty is the result of its adaptations to the desert. Many people favor this breed because it is easy to handle, strong, fast, and has a smooth gait and great endurance.

Arabian Horse Breeding

Arabians are intelligent and loyal to man. This is credited to the close contact it has had with man throughout history. Arabian horse breeding has contributed to the development of many light horse breeds such as the English Thoroughbred, Standardbred, American Saddle Horse, and Morgan.

Basic Characteristics of the Arabian Horse

  • Height: 14.1 to 15.1 hands
  • Weight: 800 to 1,000 pounds
  • Color: bay, black, chestnut, grey, roan
